Spicy Beef Masala

If you are looking for a spicy dish, you should try this recipe! I usually call this, "two in one meal", since viand and rice are combined in one for a complete satisfying meal.

Originally, this recipe is very much well-known in India. I actually learned this recipe from my godmother who visited us and brought this meal she calls Beef Masala. She told me it is spicy and to tell you honestly, I'm really not into spicy food but when I tasted this one, it satisfied my taste buds! I still prefer the not so spicy one so you can always adjust the use of chilies here.

For the main ingredient, which is beef, you can substitute mutton for it. Since beef is always available in our market, I used beef here.

What you need :

  1/2 kilo beef, cubed
  4 pcs potatoes, cut
  1 pc big carrot, cubed
  6 pcs green chili, sliced
  2 pcs tomatoes, sliced
  2 pcs onions, chopped
  1 whole garlic, chopped finely
  10 pcs peppercorn
  10 pcs cloves
  3 pcs bay leaf
  4 cups cooked rice
     salt for seasoning

SPICES :
  2 tbsp garam masala (whole)
  1 tbsp black lemon powder
  1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  1/2 teaspoon curry powder
  2 teaspoon chili powder
     some raisins
     some cashew nuts

What to do :

 1.  Place the beef cubes in a pressure cooker with enough water and boil for about 30 minutes or until tender. Add peppercorn, cloves, bay leaf and salt and cook for another 10 minutes. Don't let it dry, add more water if necessary. Remove beef from the pressure cooker. Set aside the broth for later use.

 2.  Saute garlic, onions and tomatoes in a sauce pan. Put the tendered beef, stir continuously. Add potatoes, carrot and green chili.

 3.  Pour broth (from number 1) into the sauce pan just enough level to cover the beef.

 4.  Add black lemon powder, turmeric powder, cinnamon powder, curry powder, chili powder and whole garam masala. Let it boil while stirring. Let the beef absorb the spices.

 5.  Season with salt. Boil. Don't let it dry.

 6.  Add the cooked rice. Mix well. Cook in low heat.

 7.  Garnish with raisins and cashew nuts before serving if desired.

I like Indian foods too. I haven't tried cooking any Indian dish yet, but one of these days, I will endeavour to make one - I just have to find the spices because I don't think they're available in Wal-Mart :(

Made me hungry. I'm not a fan of spicy food though. Is it super spicy or mild lang? Do you think it'll still taste good if I don't include the chili powder?
